While we don’t operate on such a large scale as Tennis Abstract (an invaluable resource to the tennis community, Jeff Sackmann is fantastic!!!), we post selected match analyses that include a bunch of data. Give it a look!
Hi @Tennis Inside Numbers, thanks for the kind words. Have really enjoyed reading your work too - it's great to see such comprehensive coverage of women's tennis.
Thanks also for providing these Gauff FH numbers - I'll revise my table to include these and will credit you!
To that point, it would be great to chat further about the process behind capturing data for these matches (and tennis data in general), as you're also providing an extremely valuable resource!
I can tell you it's a long, time-consuming process.
It all starts with match recording (which means live watching may be the only option for WTA125 and ITF finals). It is followed by video analysis with lots of slomo and rewinding, as we collect information from each point and insert it into a software - if we can call it that - that we developed. While doing it, we also take notes about the match.
Once we reach matchpoint, a quality-control is performed to confirm there are no errors (we have several checkpoints for that). Final tables and images are then edited and we proceed for data analysis, followed by writing.
As you can imagine, it's very tough to write more than 4 analyses per week. It requires a lot of time! That's why our work is paywalled, even if we would love to publish it for free. I think we are offering something unique to the tennis community but we need a few paying subcriptions. Otherwise we will be unable to commit so much time into this project as it is currently designed.
I did wonder if you had to manually record these stats - that's a huge amount of work (and so is writing 4 articles per week)! And such a great resource for the tennis community.
Hi Austen, loved your analysis of the match! Thanks for a great read!
I’m actually a fellow Substacker and can help you with in your quest for (some) match data. These were Gauff’s numbers from the forehand wing:
- 8 groundstroke winners + 3 net winners
- 11 unforced errors (1 return +10 rally groundstrokes)
- 22 total errors

Great read, really enjoy rally highlights following your analysis of play.
